Como is the city that gives the name to the whole lake and occupies its extreme southwest limb. It is the most important centre for art, transportation, economy and is located less than an hour from Milan and well connected with trains and highway.
History tells us that this area was inhabited by Galli before being conquered by the Romans in 196 BC. The town was moved and repopulated on the shores of the lake; it gradually expanded and was surrounded by walls and featuring temples, forums and villas.
Once the Roman Empire fell, Como subdued the barbarian invasions, knew the feudal regime and the subsequent communal lush life until the Spanish and Austrian domination.
Como was home to famous men: the two Plinio for what concerns the Roman period, the Magistri Comacini, who built the Cathedral, the Giovio in the Renaissance, and Alessandro Volta.
The visit of the city, at least with regard to the historical center, one can walk as it is banned car traffic. The visit of Como, then, becomes an interesting testimony to how we can still operate in urban city centers, without snaturarli, while enhancing the historical roots of a municipality.
Como is a dynamic city and business environment, the textile industry has led to a reputation nationally and internationally, and has always considered the "Capital of Silk". Many businesses have flourished internationally renowned as Mantero Seta and Ratti, the latter thanks to the patronage of Antonio Ratti, opened a foundation that takes its name and is responsible for developing new talent and organize cultural events.

Villa Olmo, an old neoclassical villa designed by Simone Cantoni is part of an integrated cultural project and has hosted several major exhibitions of painting Joan Miro, Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, and the Impressionists in Vienna, Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele.
The Teatro Sociale di Como offers a program of concerts and theatrical excellent.
